My name is Deborah Fallas and I am based in the Scottish Borders. As a child I was always cutting things up, sticking things together and generally making a mess! Nothing has changed! I am originally from Aberdeen but have been living in Galashiels, apart from a short break, for around 30 years. I first came here to study at the Scottish College of Textiles in the late eighties and after graduating, I worked in the clothing industry in a busy buying office for a national retailer.
In the late nineties, I started working for myself and have never looked back! After the birth of my daughter, I started focusing on childrenswear and Out of the Blue Kidswear was born! In the early noughties I joined a craft co-operative The Crafters. We are based in Melrose where we run our own shop and sell the work we make. Over the years, I have changed and refined my childrenswear range. I now offer personalised blankets, readymade blankets and fleece acceesories for babies and the under fives.
Over the past year or so I have been asked for a range for adults to wear. So I have been developing an Out of the Blue Grown-ups range featuring earwarmers, neckwarmers and mitts all in the same high quality lambskin polar fleece I use for the childrens range. I'm also going to experiment with some styles in a lighter french terry ideal for the summer.
I have always painted but in the past 5-6 years, it has become more and more important to me. I paint in acrylics and love the bright, vivid colours you can achieve with the medium. I also love there is no limit to what you can produce with just a brush and tube of paint and very little else. Recently I have been working on a looser, more relaxed style and concentrating on vibrant flower studies and landscapes. I love the bright colours and experimenting with different hues and colour combinations that really work when they are put together. My paintings make me happy and that's what I want my paintings to do for other people.
I make absolutely everything myself. From time to time, I have tried to focus on either on my sewing or my artwork. I just haven't been able to focus on just one of them so I am now embracing them both!
I love what I do and I hope you do too!
